Depuis plusieurs années déjà, je parcours régulièrement l’Afrique à la recherche des vipères les plus rares, les plus folles, ou les plus difficiles d’accès. Chaque année avec succès puisque nous avions toujours réalisé nos objectifs. Mais nous avons mis la barre encore plus haut cette année, en visant deux espèces particulièrement peu observées, à savoir Atheris mabuensis et Proatheris superciliaris.
Présentation : Atheris mabuensis est une Atheris qui a la première particularité d’être terrestre. Sans compter la très particulière Atheris barbouri, elles sont quand même très rares dans ce cas. Surtout Atheris mabuensis n’est connue quasi exclusivement que du Mont Mabu, une montagne totalement isolée située dans le nord du Mozambique. C’est donc une des espèces d’Atheris présentant la plus petite aire de répartition. Elle n’a été décrite qu’en… 2009 !
Proatheris superciliaris est la seule espèce du genre Proatheris. C’est une vipère dite de « marais de basse altitude ». L’habitat typique de l’espèce est en effet les basses plaines inondables qui bordent le lac Malawi. Sa répartition est donc plutôt large puisqu’elle atteindrait la Tanzanie au nord et le Mozambique au sud, mais le nombre d’observations de l’espèce se comptent sur les doigts d’une main… Soit l’espèce est particulièrement rare, soit elle est particulièrement discrète et/ou difficile à observer !
For several years now, I’ve been regularly visiting Africa in search of the rarest, craziest and hardest-to-reach vipers. Every year with success, since we’ve always achieved our objectives. This year, however, we set our sights even higher, targeting two particularly little-observed species: Atheris mabuensis, the Mt Mabu Bush Viper, and Proatheris superciliaris, the Lowland Swamp Viper.
Presentation: Atheris mabuensis is an Atheris with the primary characteristic of being terrestrial. Not counting the very special Atheris barbouri, they are still very rare in this case. Above all, Atheris mabuensis is known almost exclusively from Mount Mabu, a totally isolated mountain in northern Mozambique. It is therefore one of the Atheris species with the smallest range. It was only described in… 2009!
Proatheris superciliaris is the only species in the genus Proatheris. It is a so-called “lowland swamp viper”. The species’ typical habitat is the low-lying floodplains bordering Lake Malawi. Its distribution is therefore rather wide, reaching as far as Tanzania in the north and Mozambique in the south, but the number of sightings of the species can be counted on the fingers of one hand… Either the species is particularly rare, or it is particularly discreet and/or difficult to observe!
